Why the US Needs to Upgrade the Grid for Power Demand

In 2025, electricity has impacted and improved just about every aspect of life. In fact, it is almost certain that you wouldn’t be able to read this article without being impacted by electricity in some way. However, the demand for electricity by so many appliances, devices, and servers has begun to become overwhelming for our current power system. Right now, energy production is at its all-time high levels.

Despite this, power demand in 25 years will be around 50% higher, or around 5,178 Terawatt hours. So how can we, as a country, help ensure supply keeps outpacing demand? The most impactful way would be to stop the current level of inefficiency in the system. Between 2018 and 2022, it is estimated that 5% of the electricity distributed was simply lost.

Converting this percentage to 2025, this would mean 202.45 valuable Terawatt Hours were lost. This is enough to fully power over 14 million homes. The best solution to combat this inefficiency in the short term and the long term would be to upgrade the current power grid.

As it stands right now, 70% of transmission lines are over 25 years old and approaching their end-of-service date. Similarly, around 55% of residential transformers are over 40 years old and near their end of life as well. Fortunately, US suppliers like ELSCO are helping to keep power systems up to date and secure.

Not only are these new transformers warranty-eligible, but they are much more efficient and less likely to break down compared to transformers from over 40 years ago. While it certainly won’t be cheap or easy, future-proofing power systems across the US is an essential step to preparing for the power demand tomorrow.

If you want to keep your power systems up to date, new transformers and infrastructure are a key next step.
